RECSA AU Amnesty Month illicit firearms destruction event in Kenya

Activity description

On 9 June 2021, 5,144 illicit firearms recovered during the 2020 Amnesty month where destroyed at the Traffic Police Training Centre in Ngong, Kajiado County. The 2020 Amnesty month project was implemented by the Kenya National Focal Point in support of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs and coordinated by the Regional Centre for Small Arms (RECSA) under the funding of the Government of Japan. The US Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (WRA) also supported the exercise.

Project description

The September Africa Amnesty Month campaign is being carried out in collaboration with the African Union and the United Nations office for disarmament (UNODA) with funding from the Federal Republic of Germany and the Government of Japan. The September Africa Amnesty month was declared in 2017 by the African Union within the framework of silencing the guns by 2020 initiative and adopted by African member states.
