Activity description

As part of the Regional Assistance to 'Arms Management and Destruction in Sahel-West Africa', MAG conducted a technical risk assessment on sites located across four regions in Mali (Ségou, Sikasso, Kayes and Koulikoro). This initial assessment was conducted in cooperation with the Bonn International Centre for Conversion, the National Small Arms and Light Weapons Commission and the Malian Defence and Security Forces (MDSF). This led to an intervention plan aiming to improve the security of the weapons and ammunition storage facilities by constructing or rehabilitating the facilities, providing security for equipment and providing training for storekeepers and managers. To date, 17 armouries have been built/rehabilitated by MAG in Mali and handed over to national authorities in Mali. MAG is currently working towards improving the security of other sites identified during the initial assessment and recent assessments conducted at the request of the authorities.

Project description

The 'Arms Management and Destruction Programme for Sahel-West Africa' is a regional project co-funded by the US Department of State's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement and the German Federal Foreign Office. MAG is working with states in the Sahel and West Africa to identify areas for assistance and improve management of nationally held weapons and ammunition, with the aim of reducing the risk of diversion of items to the illicit market as well as the risk of unplanned explosions in munitions depots. The project aims to contribute to security in the region by equipping states in the Sahel and West Africa with the infrastructure and training to tackle the challenge of conventional arms proliferation in the long term.
