Parliamentary Forum Regional Meeting for Middle East and North Africa "Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons – Responsibilities, Challenges and Opportunities for Middle Eastern, North African and the Horn of Africa"
This regional meeting of parliamentarians from mainly North African and Middle Eastern countries was held on 26-27 May 2016 in Alexandria by the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons in collaboration with the Swedish Institute in Alexandria. The meeting provided an opportunity for the participants to discuss the regional situation in the Middle East, North Africa and Horn of Africa with a focus on peace, security, armed violence reduction, prevention and the role of women in armed violence reduction and prevention. The participants discussed the role of international instruments and treaties in preventing and reducing armed violence, especially the ATT and the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light (PoA). The parliamentarians discussed challenges and opportunities related to armed and SALW-related violence in the region and the role of parliamentarians in its reduction. Experts and civil society representatives from UNDP, the League of Arab States, Danish Demining Group (DDG), Women and Development Foundation, El Karama and Permanent Peace Movement also contributed their insight during the meeting.
