UNREC Legal Assistance Workshop for States Parties to the Kinshasa Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons
From 25 September 2019 to 27 September 2019 UNREC, in cooperation with ECCAS, UNOCA, the African Union and the Government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, organised a workshop on Legal Assistance for States parties to the Kinshasa Convention. The workshop was part of the project 'Supporting African States towards the Vision of Silencing the Guns in Africa 2020' led by ECCAS, UNREC and UNOCA. The workshop, attended by 46 participants from ECCAS member states and academic experts, aimed to inform the attendees about best practices to update national arms control legal texts. Moreover, the meeting allowed the participants to share best practices in implementing regulations on SALW, with particular attention on the experiences from Burundi, Sierra Leone, Mali and Burkina Faso
The project 'Supporting African States towards the Vision of Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2020' was launched by ECCAS, UNREC and UNOCA in the margins of the 47th UNSAC Ministerial Meeting launched on 7 December 2018. The aim of the project is to obtain the ratification of the Kinshasa Convention by Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Moreover, the project aims to support the harmonization with international standards of states parties' legislative frameworks on weapons and ammunition controls.
