7th AU-regions Steering Committee meeting on SALW and DDR
From 19 to 20 October 2016, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) hosted in Djibouti the seventh meeting of the African Union’s Regions Steering Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR). The main objective of the meeting was to take stock of activities carried out by the members in assistance to member states in meeting their obligations in the fight against illicit SALW in line with the draft AU Strategy on the Control of Illicit Proliferation, Circulation and Trafficking of SALW. During the meeting, the committee decided to move beyond capacity-support towards providing operational support to Member States and Regional Economic Communities (REC) in their DDR programs. Participants agreed to expand support to interventions in Mali, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and Burundi as per request. The meeting was attended by representatives from ECOWAS, UNREC, COMESA, EAC, ECCAS, IGAD, ICGLR, RECSA, SADC, the EU and the World Bank - TDRP.
The African Union (AU) Regions Steering Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) brings together Regional Economic Communities (RECs) Regional Bodies with a SALW mandate, and implementing partners and donors to enhance information sharing, coordination, joint prioritization and action review.
