Training for Defense and Security Forces Operating on the Border in Côte d'Ivoire

Activity description

As part of the UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa's (UNREC) project on Strengthening SALW Control in Côte d'Ivoire, UNREC, together with the National Commission on SALW of Cote d’Ivoire, organized a capacity building workshop for senior defense and security force officials. The training included techniques for identifying various types of SALW, related ammunition, and explosives as well as suggestions to improve border management. Expert trainers from the Regional Bureau of INTERPOL in West Africa and the National Central Bureau of INTERPOL in Abidjan were also present.

Project description

At the request of the National Commission (NatCom) on Small Arms in Cote d’Ivoire, UNREC initiated a project entitled "Strengthening SALW Control in Côte d'Ivoire." The project aims to: 1) evaluate and rehabilitate select police security stations; 2) equip select rehabilitated sites for stockpile management; 3) complete an examination of the number of arms held by private security companies in the country; 4) train defense and security forces operating along the border; and, 5) develop a guide on best practice standards in stockpile management for the NatCom.
