UNLIREC carries out double cast training in Bahamas
In the framework of UNLIREC's Caribbean Operational Ballistics Assistance Package, UNLIREC, with funding from Canada and the USA, conducted a training from 5 - 9 June 2017 in the Bahamas. Five participants, including assistant firearms examiners of the Royal Bahamas Police Force Scientific Support Services participated in the training. Participants were trained on INTERPOL's Double Casting methodology. The training sought to build capacity in the region to create microscopic replicas of projectiles and cartridge cases that can be peer reviewed and uploaded to a Ballistics Information Network and/or shared to judicial proceedings and across jurisdictions for comparison without upsetting the chain of custody or jeopardizing the original evidence. Equipment used during the training and subsequent consumables to conduct double castings were handed over to the Government of the Bahamas.
UNLIREC's Operational Forensic Ballistics Assistance Package aims to support Caribbean governments in their efforts to combat illicit trafficking in firearms and ammunition and the resulting impact on armed violence through: (i) strengthening national capacities on operational forensic ballistics; (ii) the establishment of sound national operational forensic ballistics systems; and (iii) establishing effective information management and sharing of forensic ballistics information within governments, regionally within the Caribbean and internationally via INTERPOL. The project's overall goal is to reduce armed violence and impunity by strengthening the national and regional capabilities of the law enforcement communities.
