Activity description

The focus of the seminar, organized with complementary assistance from the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), was to provide a forum for the exchange of experiences between Latin American and Caribbean states. The overall purpose of this activity was to provide an overview of the history and current status of the ATT, UN PoA and its relation with other international and Regional instruments with a special focus on the regional developments after the adoption of the Model Law on 'Firearms, Ammunition and Related Materials' promoted by the Parlatino and the Parliamentary Forum on SALW. 50 parliamentarians participated in the international conference which served as a platform to exchange ideas and experiences on a number of issues. These included: (a) the current status and future of the ATT in the region and the role of parliamentary dialogue as a tool for responsible arms transfers; (b) the ATT and its relationship with other international instruments, such as the UN 2001 PoA, ITI, and the Firearms Protocol. Participants agreed on a common written declaration in which parliamentarians highlighted the importance of inter-parliamentary exchange towards a more peaceful region.
