UNLIREC delivers its assistance package 'Preventing Armed Violence in Central America and the Dominican Republic through the Combat of Illicit trafficking in Firearms'
As part of UNLIREC´s Firearms Assistance Package for Central America and Bordering States, the Centre, between 2010 and 2014, (i) delivered Inter-Institutional Training Courses on Combating the Illicit Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives (IITCs) as well as inter-institutional training Courses on Combating Illicit Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives for Women Officers (WOT-IITCs); (ii) carried out regional and national Seminars and Specialized Courses on Best Practices in the Management of Small Arms and Ammunition as Evidence in Criminal Investigations (CEMAF); (iii) carried out regional and national Seminars on International Standards on Stockpile Management and Destruction based on the International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS) and International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATGs) and produced Technical baseline assessments on stockpile management; (iv) delivered Legal and Policy Seminars on small arms control and armed violence prevention and reduction at both national and regional level, provided support for the drafting of new firearms laws, facilitated discussions on legal firearms reforms, emitted legal opinions/dictums on national firearms bills, and elaborated comparative legal studies. The legal assistance was carried out with financial support from the Organization of American States (OAS). The Centre also undertook (v) Specialized Training Courses on Combating the Illicit Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition and Explosives for Legal Practitioners (STCs); and (vi) implemented National Seminars on Firearms and Ammunition Marking.
UNLIREC's "Preventing Armed Violence in Central America through the Combat of Illicit trafficking in Firearms" aims to strengthen Central American Member States’ capacities to curb illicit firearms trafficking and reduce armed violence through inter-institutional capacity building and technical application of international standards for small arms control. The project also aims to enhance implementation of the United Nations Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects (2001).
